We knew a furniture maker in New Hampshire who told us that when he would go to furniture trade shows all the attendees from southern companies would complain to him how the Chinese were stealing all their customers. He would reply, "what the hell did you do to us up here in New England?" Furniture, textiles and shoes, all examples of profit pillaging. First they went South, then overseas.
I like your idea of picking up the racial banana, that's what I was attempting with this post–pick it up and throw it out.
From 1948-52 I lived in Monks Corner SC where the Berkshire Woolen Mill opened a southern mill to take advantage of “cheap white labor “. I don’t remember ever seeing a black person in the office, spinning or weave rooms. Two black employees unloaded bales of wool for processing and loading trucks with bolts of cloth. All by physical labor.
Dad was a Dewey,Eisenhower, Taft Republican that became a Democrat in SC because it was the “white “ party.
The threads of today’s GOP (Generators Of Racism) have their roots in Southern Democrats and Mainline Protestant Christian segregation. The themes of discord today are no different than the intractable underscore of the cross isle “bipartisanship “ of the Southern Democrat and Northern “white Republicans. And National Christianity lived in the hushed tension of the segregated “church” and social reform faith.
The racial banana peel is always underfoot. To ignore it may avoid the fall. Time to pick it up so no one slips intentionally by accident
