I've since learned that by fudging on the issue of segregation, Stevenson was the last Democrat to carry the solid South, and that Ike was the last Republican president to basically agree with the leveling brought about by New Deal policies and legislation. Ike's thoughts about war and the developing military-industrial complex seem refreshingly progressive in the Trump/GOP era, so I guess he wasn't as bad a choice as I thought at eight going on nine.
