Rick, see my reply to Denis' comment.

I've since learned that by fudging on the issue of segregation, Stevenson was the last Democrat to carry the solid South, and that Ike was the last Republican president to basically agree with the leveling brought about by New Deal policies and legislation. Ike's thoughts about war and the developing military-industrial complex seem refreshingly progressive in the Trump/GOP era, so I guess he wasn't as bad a choice as I thought at eight going on nine.

I was just shy of five when Eisenhower first beat Stevenson in 1952, so I don't remember that election, but when he won again in 1956, I was devastated. One of my earliest childhood memories is sitting in front of our giant box of a Zenith TV with a screen the size of a salad plate watching the results. Being raised in a solidly Democrat family, Stevenson's loss seemed t like the end of the world.

Wow. Just wow.

Nicely presented , Heath.

Greed? Ignorance? Paranoia? Xenophobia? What blend of undeveloped character brought us to our present state?

I was just a young kid when Eisenhower was president, so my memories and perspectives from then must be held lightly. I know, for example, that we had the Korean “conflict.” But I seem to remember as well that, unlike the overwhelming cacophony of chaos that our present administration creates daily, there was room for genuine interest in Ike’s golf score, or how many trout he caught on any given day.

Perhaps not actually a simpler time, but certainly one that wasn’t so overwhelmingly crazy.

I Like Ike

I have a pin from my first political campaign work. It’s on my hat next to the Indivisible pin. Thanks for renewing his perspective. Ike, like G Washington, relinquished his military command to become President and executed the transfer of power with dignity
